The Derby Ram

During a series of blog comments with my new friend, Gabriela,  http://gabrielabadica.wordpress.com/ i happened to mention that the emblem for my home city is the ram. The football team are known as The Rams, and there’s even an old folk song about The Derby Ram   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACNTNJPOZ2o&feature=related (they spell Derby as Darby for some reason..?)

Oddly, the name Derby has nothing to do with a Ram as it comes from the old Danish name, Deoraby. I always understood it to mean “Place of the deer”, though i’ve also read it as “Village of the Deer”. The Stag is also the emblem for Derby and the shire.

After mentioning that we have a couple of Statues of rams in Derby, i promised to take a few photos to show Gabriela, so this blog isn’t about great photos as i took them on the way to, and then back from, the Derby Winter Beer Festival. Good real ale is not always compatible with great photography…….

Anyway, this blog is dedicated to Gabriela.

Statue of a boy on a ram. Located at the moment, in the River Gardens.

I'm really not sure why the boy is riding the ram..?

The sign for Derby City Council has an emblem that is supposed to be a ram's head as can be seen above the statue.

The back of the ram is most often used as a way up for teenagers to sit on it, though there were none there on this occasion.

The boy on the ram again.

A back view. I really must find out about this statue, and why the boy is on the back of the ram.

About PurpleT

Much of my photography is art and documentary. I try to capture a scene as i see it in my mind, whether that be black and white, colour, or somewhere in between. I try to make an interesting, and/or attractive image from what i see around me, not just what would be expected, but also subjects that would be seen boring, mundane, or ugly by many. But they all have an interest as art photography. I have also spent nearly twenty years working as a life model, then the human figure in art is very important to me, and is something i try to bring into my work at times.
