As with many of my self portrait nudes this has an element of how we are trapped in the fact that parts of society refuse to accept the natural naked human form.
I was trying out a new location that was dark, cold and wet. With all but one entry to the building blocked it really did feel like this is how we’re forced to hide the human body. Public nudity is perfectly legal in Britain, but try it and see how quickly the police arrive to force a cover up, or worse, to arrest you.
We get away with public nudity within a protest, as is demonstrated by the World Naked Bike Ride events that i try to partake in each year. But even nudity for art in the public domain becomes hazardous.
I doubt i’ll ever understand why people have such issues with non sexual nudity that brings about censorship, but have come to accept the sexualisation of the body in advertising. We have it the wrong way round!
It’s time to end censorship of the human body!
